Experience

ESL Tutor - DeAnza College 1994; Teaching Assistant University of California, Santa Cruz from 1995-2007; Teaching Assistant in Legal Writing and Research, Santa Clara University School of Law 2002. I have taken SATs, LSAT, Defense Language Aptitude Battery, and completed Theses in both Sociology and Legal Studies. I have also worked with Junior High Students as a tutor in Organizational Skills and Reading Comprehension. I trained in Negotiation, Mediation and non-violent communication at the Strauss Institute for Resolution at Pepperdine University in 2010. I interned for two and one-half years with the Northern California Innocence Project, and won an innocent man his freedom from prison after 17 years. I sat for three years on the Board of Directors for Sierra School, a private K-12 school. I am a State Certified Domestic Violence Advocate, a licensed Attorney/Counselor, an Ordained Minister, and a Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster children. I love teaching! I have three children: boy age 19, boy age 16 (highly functioning Autistic), and a daughter who is 11. All my children are or have been GATE students, so I have familiarity with GATE programs. (Also, I am kind of a Grammar Nut, so any child I work with will be expected to use proper grammar with me, and in all assignments.)

Hobbies

One of my favorite hobbies is singing. I also knit, crochet, embroider, sew, cook and bake. I believe that cooking and baking are excellent skills that any child can learn, and these give the child not only skills for life, but make them feel good about themselves. I also work with teens on issues around bullying, self-esteem, and learning to know whom to trust. These are skills that will serve them well in the workplace. I also work with my teens to help them learn to think "outside the box" when organizing their papers and essays. The feedback I get from them is that this kind of approach makes it easier for them to complete their assignments.
