Hobbies
I'm newly retired (early, but not THAT much early) from a career in journalism. My first newspaper job was as a copyeditor and late-night news editor, putting the final edition "to bed." I have worked at the largest newspaper in a state (The Charleston Gazette in Charleston, WV), and the smallest one in a city (The Sacramento Union in Sacramento, CA) -- as well as at The Sacramento Bee, from which I retired. I taught briefly (high school English and journalism), have proctored exams and have coached and tutored children of friends (reading, comprehension, composition). I have always been interested in reading for pleasure, writing for fun and profit, and all areas of popular culture -- music, dance, theater, etc. I am patient (so I've been told), enthusiastic and like to see students succeed. I believe a good foundation in grammar is essential to effective communicatiion, whether spoken or written. I'm happy to help students with homework and assignments, but I won't do it for them. We'll work through it together.
