Experience

I have been tutoring and mentoring high school students for over 10 years, both as a private tutor for academic subjects as well as an employee of an SAT prep company. I have just completed my master's during a year abroad in London as a Fulbright alternate and have just transitioned to a PhD program in Ecology at the University of Wyoming. Within the past three years, I have been heavily involved in the COSMOS program at UC Davis as a teaching assistant, encouraging the highest achieving high school students to enter STEM fields in college. I have worked with these students outside of the program on college applications, scholarship applications, internship and summer workshop applications, and general college counseling with resounding success: the students I've worked with have been admitted to Ivy League schools, honors colleges and programs, top UC schools, and competitive summer programs such as the Boston University RISE internship and the Stanford Institutes of Medicine SIMR program. It has been extremely fulfilling for me as a tutor and mentor to see the students I work with achieving their fullest potential, and I especially enjoy working with highly motivated students to give them the strongest competitive edge I possibly can. Relevant stats and scores: --163 verbal, 164 quantitative, and 6.0 analytical writing GRE scores on first attempt --2340 SAT score on first attempt (790 math/790 writing/760 critical reading) --SAT subject test scores: 740 Biology; 790 US History; 720 Math II; 720 Literature --Score of 5 on all AP tests taken: Biology, US History, Environmental Science, Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, Calculus AB --Completed AP courses in subjects listed above, honors courses for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Precalculus/Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Geometry --Accepted to four UCs with Regents Scholarship/Honors Scholarship offers: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC San Diego --Waitlisted at Harvard, Columbia University Undergraduate experience: --Regents Scholar (UC Davis) --University Honors Program --Deans List (College of Biological Sciences) --Phi Sigma Society, Delta Gamma Chapter (National Biological Sciences Honors Society) --Awarded College of Biological Sciences Outstanding Performance Citation at graduation --Laboratory teaching instructor (medical microbiology, 2015-2017) --Peer adviser with the University Honors Program --Undergraduate research assistant in zoonotic disease lab with UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine --Presenter, 2015 UC Davis Undergraduate Research Conference Postgraduate experience: --Fulbright alternate, 2018-2019 award --Student ambassador, Royal Veterinary College --Recipient of Postgraduate Bursary for Outstanding Students I greatly enjoy tutoring students who are willing to learn. I understand that despite a teacher's best efforts, in some cases subject material simply doesn't "click" the first few times a student encounters it, and that is not a failure on the part of the student. My proficiency as a tutor is to approach subject material at the level a student needing help understands it, and explore different explanations to help that student master the topic(s) with which they are struggling. I am patient and willing to listen to and understand students' questions, and I am happy to keep trying alternate teaching styles until I can help a student find the method that "clicks" for them. I am especially interested interested in assisting students with the college admissions process as I understand just how mystifying and anxiety-inducing the process can be, even for the best of students and most attentive of parents. I have ample experience editing personal statements, admissions essays, and can offer insight into what colleges look for in their top applicants as well as general advice and counseling for this process.

Hobbies

I'm a big science nerd (infectious disease research, control, and prevention is my career!) and I love to chat about my field and encourage young minds interested in biology. I enjoy playing soccer and basketball, and was a competitively ranked fencer as a teenager. I'm an avid Bay Area sports fan (go Giants!), a writing enthusiast, an amateur outdoor/wildlife photographer, and enjoy playing piano and video/board games when time allows. I'm a bit of a movie/TV buff and also mildly podcast obsessed. I am passionate about my studies in microbiology, and have taken a great interest (since high school) in infectious diseases. In particular, I am fascinated by the topic of zoonotic diseases, or diseases capable of spreading between animals and humans, and vector-borne diseases. My academic/career interests have evolved a bit as I've gone further through my education, and I am now an advocate for the "One Health" model of fighting diseases--the idea that human, animal, and environmental health are linked, and effective solutions to our greatest health challenges will be multidisciplinary approaches that take into account factors that influence each of the above groups. This led me to earn a highly unique and specialized master's degree from the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine this past year as a Fulbright alternate, and I am now following this up with a PhD in Ecology at the University of Wyoming where I study disease ecology, elk population genomics, and chronic wasting disease.
