Education

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from California State University, Chico where I was a inducted as a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and elected President of the History Club. I received my TESOL Certificate from TEFL International in Zhuhai, China. I have also completed specialist certificates in teaching one-to-one, teaching online, and teaching grammar.

Experience

Hi! My name is Lisa, and I am a certified teacher of English as a Second Language with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology. I recently spent six years in China teaching English to students of all ages at some of China's top foreign language institutions and high schools. Since returning from China I have been teaching English online, as well as working with local students in the Sacramento area. I am knowledgeable in the areas of English and ESL, teaching methodologies, and learner styles. I am experienced at courseware development and lesson planning, and I have run training sessions on the use of teaching technology. While I was living in China I earned a TESOL Certification (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from TEFL International in Zhuhai, China. This was an intensive, 120-hour course that taught the skills of teaching, methodologies, phonetics and linguistics, and supervised training practices. It was one of the more intense courses I have taken in my life, and it improved my skills dramatically! I believe strongly in the importance of establishing and maintaining rapport with my students. This means I do everything I can to create a safe and supportive learning environment that is both enjoyable and instructive. I subscribe to a blend of teaching approaches, but I try to be more of a facilitator than a lecturer, guiding students through their learning process, giving them the tools and creating the environment they need to succeed, and helping them when they have problems along the way. In addition to my ESL experience, I am knowledgeable in other areas, including Anthropology, Human Geography, and beginner French and Spanish. I would love to help you learn English, get ready for the SAT, or learn more about cultures and archaeology! I am friendly, flexible and willing to travel or even tutor online! I look forward to meeting you soon!

Hobbies

I am interested in outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fishing, roller skating, bicycle riding. I am training to play a sport called roller derby. It has been slow going for me, as I suffered a serious injury in 2014, but I am not giving up! I also enjoy reading, playing guitar, drawing, and learning foreign languages. I know some French, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.
